International Students
One
important aspect to boarding life at Bement is our small size.
Thirty-two students live in four restored colonial homes named
for prominent members of the Deerfield community. Barton House,
Bement House, Stebbins House, and Wright House were once homes
to families living in the village and now are homes to our
boarders. The students and faculty share the homes and interact
much like a family would. The four homes have double and triple
bedrooms to accommodate small numbers of students and faculty.
Our international students come from all over the world and
share our school with each other and our American boarders.
Each international student will have a roommate from a different
culture who speaks a different language. This ensures English
is the common language and our international students' skills
improve steadily through the year. We pride ourselves on how
well our international students learn English, both in the
classroom and at home in the dorms.
The students participate in all aspects of daily life and
return in the evenings with their friends to the dorms. After
school they engage in sports, hobbies, and activities above
and beyond the school's requirements. Many have private music
lessons, work on projects with teachers after school, or spend
time riding their bike or playing outdoors on our 10 acre
campus.
On weekends, the students take advantage of the many opportunities
we arrange. Trips to area towns, cultural outings, museums
and historical places around New England, professional and
college sporting events, shopping, and movies are some of
the many activities our boarders enjoy. The area's "five colleges"
(Amherst, Hampshire College, Mt. Holyoke, Smith, and University
of Massachusetts), provide a wide variety of opportunities
for dramatic performances, athletics and movies to satisfy
nearly every taste. Each weekend there are on-campus opportunities
such as relaxing with friends, ping-pong tournaments, "movie
night", crafts and cooking, games and sports. These extracurricular
options are important for the students to socialize and practice
their English in less formal settings than the classrooms.
Their education continues after classes are over and they
benefit from each other and the other members of our community.
We are very proud of our international students and feel
lucky to have such a group with us each year. They work hard
and learn a great deal while they share their experiences
with us. They are also very successful after they graduate
from Bement. Gaining acceptance to some of the top secondary
schools; our international students are wonderful ambassadors
for Bement and their families. Recent international graduates
have continued on to Deerfield, Philips Exeter, Brooks, Miss
Hall's School, Loomis Chaffee, Blair Academy, Westminster,
Suffield, and Brewster Academy.
Thank you for taking the time to look at our school. We
hope you can visit in person and see the many wonderful things
we do each day. If you have questions contact the Admission
Office.
